Review #9 - Murf's Better Burger

By the Honorable Chief Justice Warren E. Burger
We came to Murf's with hope for a better burger, a better french fry, perhaps... a better life. Alas, those hopes were stolen from us, much like a hungry woman who knows she ordered a single cheeseburger and yet still takes the double cheeseburger that is clearly not hers. (Ah, but I'm getting ahead of myself.)
The location, at 7102 San Pedro Ave, San Antonio, TX, apparently was not nice enough for a Whataburger, or whatever used to occupy this thin stretch of prime real estate across from a Cash 4 Checks store.

Unfortunately for its patrons, all 3 stations are manned by this guy:

(Actually he was probably the best part about Murf's. He worked very hard. Most employees of this place would have walked into San Pedro traffic by now.)
Burgers. So the location and the service weren't great, but how about the food, you ask? The burgers got an average rating of a 3 out of 10. Hamburgler gave them a 4.5, but for that rating the place must have given him a better bribe.

Sides. Prefers His Tots Tatered was rightly dismayed by the lack of tator tots. Yours truly was sorely disappointed by the absence of onion rings. (The Chief Justice likes to eat his veggies.) With an average score of 1.5, the rest of the burger clan agreed. The only sides were fries, and they were about as good as what the elementary school lunch lady made, only with less seasoning.

Where's the beef? got his milkshake (which was not great), while the rest of us got this:
Ambiance. Now here is where Murf's really shines. Delightful decorative touches abound. Fresh flowers:

They also seem to have taken our President's call for a green revolution to heart, by installing compact fluorescent light bulbs:

...well, 3 out of 5 at least.
Also, Murf's exhibits the latest in wireless phone technology:
(In case you can't tell, that's an empty box.)
And to complete this urban oasis, there's a palm tree:
Even with all of that, the reviewers gave Murf's an average of 2.5 for ambiance. Murf's was so bad, even the Chief Justice can't really capture it. So I leave you with a smattering of comments from my fellow sufferers:
Prefers His Tots Tatered: "...just very unremarkable. Tasted much like a lower quality fast food burger." "I cannot imagine a scenario where sides would be worse."
Hamburgler: "At best, I'd say it was mediocre."
Fry Daddy: "Murf got the fries straight from the supermarket frozen food section, although I think he may have had some trouble following the preparation directions on the bag. And I still want my shake."
Where's the Beef?: "One word- a lesser version of a McDonald's hamburger." "Looked like a bombed out Sonic." "One of the worst fries I've ever had in my life."
Burger Boy: "Of all the burger's I've eaten, this was one of them."
Murfs is Good...........
Mirfs be gotten some tasty azz birgers, yummtacular ya'lls
Murfs makes my belly bulge
Murf's used to part of the old Whopper Burger chain until it became Murf's in 1985. The quality seemed to drastically decline after Murf's owner, Mr. Murphy, passed away several years ago. I had the opportunity to meet him at the San Pedro location in the mid 80's when I brought my girlfiend there to eat, and he was very friendly, introduced himself, and asked all the customers how their food was. All restaurant owners should be that attentive...
...and the burgers were excellent back then, by the way.
Pretty good burgers. Good for the price.
Murf's Better Burgers is Amazing!!!!! I don't know what this guys is posting about. Its like he was expecting a good ole burger joint to be like a Red Robin or Chili's. Mr. Murphy was an Amazing owner but even more an Amazing Grandad to me. RIP Grandaddy. We will always love you.
Murfs is really good
honestly its one of my favorite burger joints in SA
not to mention most of my friends
its one of our fav spots to go eat
but hey we all have our opinions right
best burgers ever
I don't know what this Justice Warren E. Burger is talking about? He has no taste for a GREAT burger. He is more than likely used to eating a burger that is frozen and not made to order. I love Murf's no matter what he/ she says. Murf's sure has the best burgers in the city. ( In closeing ) I am sure she eat the WHOLE thing !
Murf's was always my burger joint; the burgers near great, and, on a good day, fries that are transcendant. Sadly, I've been exiled to Austin. Here, Dan's is pretty close, but MBB fries beat any in Texas.
i seen murfs better burger in the movie johnny be good , looks like a fun place to eat .
Murf's is no more. Everything was bulldozed away months ago.
Murf's still lives on West Ave.!!!!!!!!!!!
What's really funny about these "so called" burger experts is they rant and rave about all the fu-fu high end burger joints that aren't any good. Yet they dog the real good places like Murfs, Floyds Dairy Bar and Griffs. Its almost as if places like Bigz and all those other joints paid these morons off. Anyone who's lived in San Antonio all their life knows joints like Murfs are the best. I'll take a Murfs burger anyday of the week. Don't listen to these clowns. They don't know shit about burger joints.
there's a Murfs on New Braunfels ave. next to bill millers. the burgers are good and i love there fry's
Your taste buds are all out of wack! This place was not horrible as you're making it seem. It's delicious there. Might not be appealing on the outside but the food is not bad; especially for the price. I pay 15 bucks for both myself and uncle at Whataburger and about 9 bucks total for TWO delicious hamburgers here! Get a clue. You phony of a critic. Nice pictures, I'll give you that.
I grew up by the Whopper Burger on West Avenue. I LOVE Murf Burger. But.. much to my breaking heart, I see there the Murf Burger on N. New Braunfels is gone and the Murf Burger on San Pedro is now a car wash. I was heart broken! Scared to check the West Avenue Location....Very sad
this fool must be as bland as the food he's obviously adapted to eating! murf's is one of the best in San Antonio has been since I was a kid! the only down side to murf's for me is that they're no longer conveniently located throughout our city! but I tell u what even with 6 kids & a gas guzzling suburban I will still make the trip from foster rd to west avenue to spare myself the disappointment of many other burger joints that are on the way!
This blogger guy is a hater! Murf Burger is the bomb. I remember the old E. Commerce St. location. You get huge juicy burgers for cheap, it look like he purchased the murf jr. burger. And it don't matter how a restaurant look as long as they have good food. Arby's have nice establishments but their food is dry & nasty.
I agree with you...this blogger probably grew up eating lettuce burgers lol.
This guy sounds like he is linked to the burger boy which was the former whopper burger chain owned by the bates family. If you type Whopper burger in a search you get the Burger Boy review. the web page looks identical to this style!!! He slams Murf's which has always been a great burger, and praises Burger Boy (Whopper Burger). You are a fool. The burgers are the same!!! you were paid or related to the family... Either way you should not review food. They don't suck your taste does.....
Murph's was great, as was Burger Boy before it, and Whopper Burger before that. I long for the French fries, and it's taken time to find a burger as good. And just for nostalgia, I also long for the cheese enchiladas at El Rancho.
Murph's burgers can compete with any burgers in the San Antonio area. You can't beat the prices, and the food is hot right off the grill. If you want "fine dining" don't go to Murph's. If you want a damn good cheeseburger and get your hands a little dirty, go to Murph's. You won't find much etiquette there, but it will cure your craving for a tasty burger, for sure.

I went to the West Ave location about twenty years ago. From what I recall, the food was decent. The locations AC was down and they had all the doors/windows wide open. It was 15+ degrees hotter in the store then sitting in your car, flies were all over the place. I remember saying lets eat in the car as sweat dripped down my face.
