"The Outlier"
If you like a solid burger, stray cats, and Texas country music, Chunky's is the place for you. Although the place was inside 410 (on Callaghan), the view was nothing but trees due to the lack of development around Chunky's, which made it seem more remote than it was. Some of the 09ers in the group actually thought we were in Kerrville because of the country-like surroundings (they lose all sense of time and direction when you take them outside the bubble).
Flying in the face of our country's bleak economic times, Chunky's is putting America back to work one burger at a time. Hopefully the new unemployment figures will reflect Chunky's optimism.
Burger: 7.0 out of 10.
Most bloggers rated the burger above average but one blogger was a true outlier in his love for the Chunky's burger. Overall the bloggers felt the burger was solid, good sized, and moderately priced. A good overall value.
The buns came lightly buttered causing the burger to shine in the South Texas sun.
Sides: 6.0 out of 10: Not much to report in the way of sides, ordinary being the most apt description. One interesting option was "Frings" a half order of fries and onion rings, perfect for the less decisive bloggers. The rings looked promising but didn't quite live up to expectations.
Ambience: 8.5 out of 10. Chunky's rated highest in this category and deservedly so. You don't feel like you are inside 410 while at Chunky's. Make sure you go on a nice day and eat on the patio.
You can also make friends with the cats who have taken up residence at Chunky's.
If you like Texas Country music you will love Chunky's patio. I've spent a good deal of my life in beer joints and Chunky's has one of the best mixes I have heard.
Overall Chunky's has a good, if not great, burger in a great setting. The service was excellent, possibly because the owner / manager asked us why we rolled into his idllyic burger joint, cameras in tow, like the paparazzi at a Lindsay Lohan premiere. Enjoy Chunky's patio, music, and burgers; skip the sides and wash it down with a cold beer.

I just heard on the radio that "Man vs Food" was at Chunky's this week. I have seen Chunky's but never been. I liked the review and will give it a try sometime. Thanks!
Im all the way up in NYC calling my redneck relatives that live in the place called Texas and telling them to give it a try!!!
Dig the blog! Chunky's looks cool. So funny, I just set this map thing up a few days ago and just found your site tonight via watching Man vs Food. Here are my Top 9 burgers in progress - I need to hit some of y'alls selections.

coming down from FTW, to get my hands on that Fourhorseman!
we met up with my sister and her family at Chunkys Burgers for the Horseman Challenge that was featured on Man VS Food just to be disappointed. There was no seating and a long wait for food. There was a sign outside saying they were not have the horseman challenge. But we desided to still wait and order. Once it was finally our turn to order we were told they were completly out of peppers. WHAT!!!!! So you watch them on Man VS Food with there whole gimic is to eat spicy burgers and they have no peppers. Was I mad, I stopped my hubby from ordering and we left I was not going to spend 9.99 on a burger and that does not include fries or drink to stand and eat it.
Food made me and two other friends sick. Burgers and fries were cold. Would not go back, unless I had too much to drink and went to do the 4 horseman. Too many other good burger joints to waste your time and stomach at Chunkys.
While I was in San Antonio, I beat the Four-Horseman burger (with Ghost peppers from India) challenge on 09/29/09. And yes, it is a real challenge!! There are rules and you are personally monitored by an employee for the limited challenge time-period. When I left the restaurant, I was the only one of six who had beaten the challenge that day. I was told my picture would be displayed on the Fire-and-Flame honor board. I had to leave for Tennessee the next morning. So, I never saw my picture on the board. Chunky's facility is rustic, very low profile. It gets a little noisy, especially during a challenge. With me were three family members who indicated their hamburgers and fries were ok. The service was good, the employees and management were "very, very nice." The Four-Horseman burger and one glass of milk, after a waiting period, are free if you complete the challenge successfully. I had a ball!! The challenge is not for the faint-of-heart. You have to sign a waiver of liability. This is the real deal.

Just went today and some guy who clearly was not used to spicy food tried the Four-Horsemen Burger and totally bypassed the chuck bucket on the floor and spewed all his slimy, half digested burger bits onto the concrete floor. Just thought I'd say it here. :)
I was in that part of town and was hungry so I decided to try it out. My usual order at any burger joint is a a bacon cheese burger, unless I am at Chris Madrids - then it's the macho tostada burger.
Anyway, ordered fries to go along with it and shouild have just ordered the burger. It was huge - could barely finish it - and I'm not a small guy at 6'-0" and 270 pounds. Enjoyed the burger and Chunky definitely knows how to hire his help...
Went to Chunks last night and I must say the customer service was excellent, the girls up front greeted me with a smile and were very polite, Ordered a jalapeno burger and it was good and spicy, The counter person asked me if I only wanted half and order of fries and Im glad she did because that was more than enough. The whole time I was sitting and eating my burger the three girls constantly came by and asked me if I needed anything. The cooks, staff were all friendly and great.. I Plan to take people from work there....
Man I want to go to Chunkys when i move back to San Antonio
SA sucks
Chunkys is awesome. now one of my favorite places to eat. but sadly this past weekend we attempted to try the four horseman. 3 words: DONT DO IT! i took one bite and felt my life was over. but at least i can say ive felt the wrath.
haha going today! little scared after everything people have said about it. wanted to go because i saw it on man vs food. my dads gunna try the 4 horseman scaryy hopefully they have it
I went to Chunkys yesterday... it was not worth the 15 minute trip. I ordered the guacamole burger and my boyfriend ordered the double meat, the meat had no taste whatsoever but the veggies were fresh. My boyfriends hamburger bun was old, hard and falling apart. The fries were cold. The only good thing was the service and the Big Red. Chesters is WAY better.
ryan sucks
I and my husband got really sick (all night) after eating the burger at Chunky's. We love spicy food but there is something in the burgers that made us sick. We will not go back. We are afraid of Chunky's.
Im from California and i dont know why people say Chesters is good it really isnt SA needs an IN&OUT burger joint. The best burger you'll ever try...
Tried the In&Out burgers and it ain't all that, even McDonald's taste better than In&Out.Whataburger is alot better Nelly Nel.
They need to get rid of the Cats.
the family goes to chunky's about once or twice a month.GOOD burgers ,O.K sides ,but the services SUCKS.I wonder who didn't get the job.The cooks are more friendlier than the order taker.
Burgers are delicious and fillings, burger, fries, and onion rings are best in San Antonio.Best burger joint joint I tried since I been in San Antonio 9 years.
I WANT TO GO SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BADD! IT LOOKS SO KOOL!
stop being like a kid...retard
I did the 4 horsemen challenge this week at Chunky"s!!!!I can eat all the hot stuff u put in front of me,BUT.....this challenge got me!!I ate half and was shaking, tears rolling down, and thought the world was coming to an end.I don't regret for a minute doiing the challenge, and my hats off to anyone who can do it, and its beyond me how someone can do it.The heat is sooooo intense its un real.I hurt all night long!!But hey,its a challenge and I tried it.Todd
I tried the horsemen. It's on you tube. Got half way and no
mas. Tried the place later and got a bacon burger and was impresed that there regular burgers actually have flavor. Seeing how you can't taste anything when eating the four horsemen. Craig
My buddy and I tried Chunky's the other night, and all I can say is that was one hell of a burger. I went with the more modest jalapeno burger, (double meat of course), whick was quite good, with plenty of jalapenos. My buddy had said he was going to try the four horseman, but alas, chickened out and ended up going with the ghost chili burger. He only made it about 3/4 of the way through. Overall the burgers were very good and the sides left a bit to be desired but still were ok. Definitely would go again. Jim
I finally went to Chunky's to see what all the fuss was about. I kept it simple by ordering a traditional Bacon Cheeseburger. It was awesome! I think that particular burger is better than anyone I've ever tasted in San Antonio! I have lived hear for 40yrs and I've tried most popular places such as Lord's, Chris Madrids, Gourmet Burger, etc...
Chunky's burger puts those others to shame.
As far as the sides, I only tried the fries... they were ok, but not OMG good. The burger alone is a good reason to come back.
I'm definitely going to put this one on my list of favorites.
IM FROM CHICAGO ILLINOIS i have seen the Man vs Food.I just Moved over here to San Antonio. I would like to try the four horseman burger. I love the hot flavor. What's the challenge i seen the challenge i want it!Angelo from Chicago Illinois get back at me i don't know where your at!
